Obituary

Crystal Falls: George W. Bauer, age 78, of Crystal Falls, died Friday, April 22, 2005, at Iron County Community Hospital in Iron River, MI. He was born and raised in Crystal Falls, the son of George Bauer Sr. and Doris(Le Plante) Bauer. He attended Forest Park Schools until he joined the U.S. Navy during the Second World War at age 17. He was presented with his Eagle Scout award by the Captain of his ship. In October 1998, the Hiawatha land Council of Scouting, presented him with the Silver Beaver Award for service to Scouting. Young Scouts will remember him as their instructor in "Footsteps", Camp Hiawatha. Following his discharge from the Navy, he completed prep courses at Ferris State before going on to Michigan State University where he received his Bachelor's degree. He completed his teaching certification and later his Masters Degree at Northern Michigan University in 1969. He was an avid naturalist, canoeist, hiker and fly-fisherman. During the 1960's he worked in Northern Canada at Norway House Manitoba and Fort George (Chisasibi) Quebec. While there he collected and prepared a study called "Cree Tales and Beliefs" published by the Dept. of Anthropology and University of Maine. He also wrote and published extensively in periodicals in the U.S.A. and Canada. On his return from Quebec in 1969, he began teaching in Breitung Township Schools. He retired as a third grade teacher there, after twenty-two years. He was fond of meeting former students as adults and listening to them relate "classroom" stories. He is survived by his wife Audrey (Thompson) Bauer and his daughters Gretchen (Donald) Carter of Oak Hill, West Virginia and Kristen (Jason) Frye and granddaughter Lauren Frye of Levering, MI, as well as his aunt Loretta Kennedy of Crystal Falls and several cousins. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Crystal Falls on Tuesday April 26 at 1:30p.m. for friends and family. Manuel Padilla will officiate. A reception will follow the service.
