IRON RIVER – Geno G. Fiorazo, 79, died unexpectedly on May 11, 2009, one week short of his 80th birthday, at Marquette General Hospital after being transported there from Northstar Health System Emergency Department. He underwent emergency surgery to attempt to repair a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.
He was born May 18, 1929, in Caspian, son of the late Valentino and Cecilia (Bicego) Fiorazo. Geno was a star athlete in Stambaugh High School where he graduated Class of 1947. He achieved All-State in football and basketball and also played on the local baseball teams. Geno was an avid sports fan all of his life.
Geno was a subterranean iron ore miner and worked for Pickens-Mather and M.A. Hanna mining Companies at several area mines including the Buck mine.
He was previously married to the former MaryAnn Parrotta. In 1963, he and his family relocated to North Springfield, Virginia where he worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and retired from there in 1992. Geno returned to Iron River in 1995, where he was best known for being an extraordinary friend and neighbor. He valued those relationships and was always there to lend a helping hand.
Of significant importance to him was providing for his children's educations. He was especially proud of the fact that all three of his children have gone on to obtain advanced college and professional degrees.
Geno is survived by his daughter, Debbie VonBeulen, Mesa, Arizona; two sons, Gene Fiorazo, Springfield, Virginia, Dr. Val Joseph (Paula) Fiorazo; two grandchildren, Amanda and Aaron; Edmond, Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bruno, Arthur, and Victor; and two sisters, Ilda (infant) Fiorazo and Amelia Demilio.
