Gary John Hilberg, 69, of Crystal Falls, passed away on August 21, 2026.

Gary was a hardworking man who built his life around the things that mattered most to him—family, friends, the outdoors, and the simple pleasures of life. He was married to his wife, Diane (Harrington) Hilberg, for 47 years, sharing a lifetime of companionship and memories together.

Through Hilberg Logging, Gary spent many years doing work that reflected his strong work ethic and his connection to the woods and the Upper Peninsula he called home.

When he wasn’t working, Gary was happiest outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at camp, where he could relax, enjoy the peace and quiet of the woods, and make memories with the people closest to him. Whether it was a day in the woods, time on the water, or simply sitting around camp, these were some of the moments Gary treasured most.

Gary believed in making the most of life and wasn’t afraid to see where the next road might lead. One of his favorite sayings captured that spirit perfectly: “You have to venture to have adventure.” It was more than a saying—it reflected the way Gary approached life and the many experiences and memories he gathered along the way.

Gary was also a loyal Detroit sports fan. Through the good seasons and the not-so-good ones, he remained a devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions. Watching the games was something he truly enjoyed and a pastime he shared with family and friends.

Gary is survived by his wife, Diane Hilberg; his daughters, Erin Hilberg (Jon Pleaugh) and Kim Bjork (Scott Bjork); and his siblings, Ron (Diane) Hilberg, Bill (Rose) Hilberg, Jeanne (Mike) Ferraro, Sandy (Kenton) Pfister, George (Patty) Hilberg, Rich Tegge, Linda (David) Rajala, and Steve (Kathy) Tegge. He is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, and nephews, along with extended family and friends who were an important part of his life.

Those who knew Gary will remember him not only for the life he lived, but for the stories, laughter, friendships, and memories he leaves behind. His presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.

A Celebration of Life for Gary will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Gary and Diane’s camp, 199 Noyes Rd., Crystal Falls, MI 49920. Family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate Gary’s life. Please bring your favorite memories and stories of Gary to share, along with a lawn chair.
