Obituary

Frederick J. Jansky, 79, of Florence, Wis., passed away peacefully Friday, July 11, 2008, at Golden Living Center in Florence after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Frederick was born on February 23, 1929, in Manitowoc, Wis., the son of Victor and Amelia (Jachimstal) Jansky. He was raised in Manitowoc and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947. In 1947, he started working for the Wisconsin Bell Telephone Company installing telephone poles and lines. A short time later he joined the US Navy. During his four year enlistment he served as an Electrician's Mate on two different submarines, the USS Pickerel (SS-524) and the K-3. The Pickerel was stationed off the coast of Korea and Russia and was one of only two that received Combat Action Ribbons during the Korean War. While aboard the Pickerel, Fred spent 21 days (14 March to 3 April 1950) submerged on a trip from Hong Kong to Honolulu, Hawaii. At the time this set a record distance (5,200 miles) for submerged snorkeling by a submarine. In addition, on his birthday in 1950, from a depth of 250 feet and a speed of 18 knots, the Pickerel surfaced at a 72 degree angle. This high angle maneuver was very unusual and dangerous and is likely a record. As a Korean War Veteran, he became a life member of the Sheboygan Memorial VFW Post 9156. On December 15, 1951, he was united in marriage to Caroline Mae Cherney at Vallejo, Calif. They resided in California and Hawaii before settling in Sheboygan Falls, Wis. in 1952. He later designed and built a new home there in 1962. In 1969, he and his family moved to a home on Lake Michigan on the far south side of Sheboygan. Fred worked for Wisconsin Bell Telephone as a telephone and PBX installer and repairman until his retirement at the age of 55 in 1984. He served as a Boy Scout Master in Sheboygan Falls when his sons were in scouts and for several years was treasurer of his local union, the Communication Workers of America. Over the years Fred was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sheboygan Falls, St. Peter Claver Catholic Church in Sheboygan, Grace Lutheran Church in Powers, and St. John's Lutheran Church in Florence. He always enjoyed boating, fishing and camping and spent many hours fishing on Lake Michigan on his boat, the Carol Mae. Fred had also camped, fished and hunted in the Florence area since he was 16 years old and later spent vacation time there with his wife and family for many years. After Caroline's death on February 23, 1992, in Sheboygan, Fred followed one of his dreams and moved to Florence where he lived on Loon Lake. On June 19, 1993, he was united in marriage to Audrey (Bruce) LeBoeuf in Hyde, Mich. Fred enjoyed traveling and spent many winters at Winter Haven Resort in Brownsville, Texas, where he made new friends and learned to play the accordion again, something he learned as a youngster. In addition, he also became interested and talented in fish taxidermy and digital photography. Fred felt blessed that he was able to accomplish everything that he hoped for during his lifetime.
