Fred O. Zambon, 85, of Iron Mountain, Michigan, died Saturday, January 29, 2005 at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.
He was born July 18, 1919 in Iron Mountain, son of the late Ferdinand and Olive (Flessati) Zambon. He graduated from Iron Mountain High School and was a lifelong resident of the north side of Iron Mountain.
He married the former Lorina Willan on March 15, 1941. She preceded him in death on March 25, 2001, shortly after their 60th wedding anniversary.
Fred was a World War II Army veteran serving in the Combat Engineers in the 1st army and also serving in the Combat Engineers in the 3rd army. He was awarded 4 Bronze Battle Stars and the Purple Heart, amongst others.
He was employed by the Iron Mountain Fire Department from 1946 until 1955. He was then employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a rural carrier until his retirement in 1976.
Fred was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Iron Mountain all of his life. He was a member of the D.A.V. for over 50 years and was also a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He loved to go to his camp and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Wendy Bennett, in 1961. He is survived by one daughter, Sharon (Frank) Bennett of Gaylord, lower Michigan; one son, Terry (Candy) Zambon of Iron Mountain; six grandchildren, Renee (Doug) Becker of Gaylord, Debbie (Jack) Janisch of Johannesburg, lower Michigan, Karla (Larry) Frabotta of Macomb, lower Michigan, Tammy Zambon of Stephenson, Michigan, Tony (Michelle) Zambon of Canton, lower Michigan, and Derek Zambon of Belleville, lower Michigan; eight great-granddaughters and one great-grandson; one brother, Albert of Iron Mountain and three sisters, Norma (Edward) Ditz of Fredericksburg, VA, Jean (Raymond) Rack of New York, and Marcella McGuire of Kingsford, MI.
Visitation Tuesday February 4, 2004 from 5.-7p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The D.A.V. will offer a veterans memorial service Tuesday 6:45p.m. at the funeral home. A prayer service will be held Wednesday 10:30a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, with the Mass of Christian Burial to follow 11.a.m. Wednesday, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain with Fr. Raymond Valerio officiating.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Fred's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
