Frank "Gooch" Oien, 86, of Iron Mountain, passed away Friday, December 30, 2011, at his home. He was born June 12, 1925, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Ross and Elvera (Franco) Oien. Frank married Dorothy Peebles in 1956. She preceded him in death on December 25, 2003. Frank grew up in Iron Mountain and graduated from Iron Mountain High School, Class of 1943. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 until April 29, 1946, when he was honorably discharged and moved back to the area. In 1948, he started in the floor covering business out of his father's home for the Myron Hughe's Floor Covering Company until 1953. At that time, Frank started Oien's Floor Covering on West Hughitt Street and in 1973 opened Oien's Interiors, which still operates today. He retired at 63 but continued to help out at the store until 2008. His son, Jim, operates the store today. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, past member of the Country Club for over thirty years, and the Iron Mountain Elks Lodge, where he rarely missed a Thursday night Stag dinner. Frank is survived by one son, Jim (Darlene) Peebles, Kingsford; one daughter, Darlene (Kenneth) Lindstrom, Iron Mountain; seven grandchildren, Cynthia Lindstrom, Green Bay, Wis., Lisa (Timothy) Danielson, Oshkosh, Wis., Catherine (David) Lindsley, Green Bay, Kenneth J. Lindstrom, Appleton, Wis., Lori (Alan) Unger, Kingsford, Shari (John) Van Remortel, Kingsford, Michael Peebles, Phoenix, Ariz.; ten great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Kristi Unger, Maclain, Jack, and Nicholas Danielson, Alison and Bradley Van Remortel, Noah, Lauren, and Aaron Lindsley; two sisters, Carol (Robert) Calcari, Lois Kopp, both of Iron Mountain; two nieces, one nephew, and several cousins. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Delores Collies in 2011. Private family visitation and services were held. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.
