Kingsford:
Fiore Gianunzio, 82, of 912 Carollo St. Kingsford, Michigan, died Thursday, May 8, 2003 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Fiore was born June 10, 1920, in Iron Mountain, Michigan, son of the late Nunzio and Isabella (D'Alphonso) Gianunzio. He attended Iron Mountain High School and graduated in 1938. He then worked and trained for highway sign painting from 1938-1941. In September of 1941, Fiore was drafted into the US Army and went directly to Communications School in the Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He completed sixteen weeks of schooling and graduated as a cryptographer. He then served
two years in the Aleutian Islands, 1942-1944, and also served in Europe from 1944-1945.
He was awarded a bronze star for each of the five campaigns. He received special awards from the Veterans Administration to attend courses at Northern Michigan University and attended there from 1946-1953. On May 3, 1947, Fiore married Lorraine "Sis" Carollo at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. She preceded him in death on May 27, 1996. Fiore operated and serviced steam and diesel locomotives for C & NW Railroad from 1951-1953. From 1953 to 1963 he was employed at General Controls Company as an expediter processor, he then took a position at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Michigan. He served as Deputy Director and Director of the Dickinson County Equalization Department for many years. He attended the University of Michigan and took special courses to qualify as a Certified Assessor Level III. He was elected Dickinson County Drain Commissioner in 1962, and served until September 1965. He served on the council of the Office of Veterans Affairs from 1956 through 1998 and 42 years as their Budget and Finance Officer. He served on the Dickinson County Tax Allocation Board for three years, and on the original first committee that started the County Library. Fiore was a member of American Martyrs Church in Kingsford. He also served on Community Chest, Red Cross, and many other committees. He also served as Commander of the American Legion Post 363 of Kingsford, and Finance and Budget Officer for the Veterans Affairs.
In 2000, Fiore wrote a novel entitled Manga Ferro (" The Iron Eater"), a story about his Father, Nunzio, an Italian Immigrant, who came to our county in 1900 to raise his family.
He is survived by one son Michael (Jacquelyn) Gianunzio of Mukilteo, Washington, one brother Anthony Gianunzio of Kalamazoo, Michigan, three sisters Mary (John) DeGrave of Iron Mountain, Mickey Schroud of Madison, WI, Tina (Oscar) Garcia of Madison, Wisconsin, two grandchildren, Christopher and Andrea Gianunzio, numerous nieces and nephews, and a very special friend Rita Sparapani of Kingsford..
Beside his parents and wife, Lorraine, Fiore was preceded in death by five brothers Romeo, Joseph, Rudolph, Louis, and John Gianunzio, and one sister Elaine Ferguson.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 11, 2003, from 4 p.m. to 6p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron Mountain, Michigan. Parish prayers will be Sunday at 5p.m. at the Funeral Home. The funeral services will be Monday, 9:30am. at the Jacobs Funeral Home with the Mass of Christian burial to be held Monday, 10a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford with Fr. Joseph Guoin officiating. Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain. Graveside military rites will be accorded by the Kingsford American Legion Post 363.
