Everette C. "Jute" Nichols, 89, of Summerfield, Fla., formerly of Fence, Wis., passed away Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at his home.
He was born May 27, 1920, in Fern, Wis., son of the late Edward (EJ) and Sylvia (Thomas) Nichols. On Nov. 17, 1945, Jute was united in marriage to the former Harriet Czernek. She preceded him in death on March 1, 1995.
During World War II, Jute was in the 819th Engineer Aviation Battalion. On D-Day, he landed at Normandy and constructed the first landing strips for planes to land. Jute earned a Good Conduct Medal, Marksman Badge, Honorable Service Button, World War II Victory Medal, and The Presidential Unit Citation.
Jute was a member of the Fence Union Church, Local 150 of Chicago, Ill., American Legion Post No. 211, and VFW Post No. 3635, of Florence, Wis. He enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking, gardening, traveling, playing cards, country music, and hunting and fishing in his younger years.
He is survived by his son, Edward (Carole) Nichols, Summerfield, Fla.; daughter, Barbara (Mark Michie) Bowman, Harshaw, Wis.; sister, Mabel (Pete) Ottum, Norway, Mich.; five grandchildren, Carolyn (Tim) Kyllonen, Matthew (Peggy) Nichols, Eddie Nichols, Jim Bowman, Jeff Bowman; three great-grandchildren, Ryan Kyllonen, Paige and Aiden Nichols; one aunt; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jute was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Patrick, and Melvin.
