Crystal Falls- Evelyn M. Fillis, age 89, of Crystal Falls, Michigan, died Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at Iron County Hospital in Iron River, Michigan. Evelyn was born September 12, 1914 in Ralph, Michigan, daughter of the late Pius and Charolette (Kadnako) Hammersmith. Evelyn lived in Ralph until moving to Crystal Falls in 1945. She married Harold Fillis on October 17, 1931. Evelyn worked as a nurse's aid at Crystal Manor Nursing Home. She was a member of the Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Crystal Falls. Evelyn enjoyed crocheting and knitting, and had knitted many things for the V.A. hospitals and St. Vincent de Paul Society. Evelyn is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Harold; 3 daughters, Doris (William) Stacy, Lois (William) Gillespie, all of Crystal Falls and Sandra (Eugene) Pellizzaro of Stambaugh Township; 2 sisters, Alice Farrell of Hardwood, Michigan, and Erma Tomas of Evanston, Illinois. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde and Robert Hammersmith. Visitation will be Thursday, August 19, 2004 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home in Crystal Falls. A rosary service will be offered Thursday at 8 pm at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, August 20, 2004 11:00 am at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Crystal Falls. Fr. Dino Silvestrini will officiate. Burial will take place in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Crystal Falls.
