Florence: Evelyn "Paddy" M. Cleary, age 99, of Florence, WI, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at Dickinson County Hospital in Iron Mountain, Michigan. She was born in Commonwealth, WI, on St. Patrick's Day March 17, 1905 to Emil and Corrine (Robichaud) Durand. She was affectionately known as Paddy. One of seven children, her four sisters and two brothers have preceded her in death. Paddy graduated from Florence High School in 1922. Following high school she taught grade school in Edgar, Wisconsin and Finntown, Wisconsin until her marriage to David Cleary of Florence on August 8, 1928. They resided in Milwaukee during the early years of their marriage and then returned to Commonwealth where their three children were born and raised. While residing in Commonwealth, Paddy served as Town Clerk of Commonwealth and occasionally as a substitute teacher in the Florence Grade School. Returning to Milwaukee in the 1950's she was employed by Kresge Corporation as a bookkeeper until retirement in 1969 when they moved back to Florence. Always an avid reader, Paddy read as many as three books a week during retirement until her eyesight failed in recent years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Legion of Mary. Dave preceded her in death in April of 1979. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1978. Paddy then returned to Milwaukee to live until 1993 when she again returned to Florence, residing at the Chapin Heights Apartments. Paddy was able to live independently to 99years of age only because of the care, help and support of many kind Florence residents to whom her family will be ever grateful. Survivors include three children; Patricia (Ed) Bremberger of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Jack (Lila) Cleary of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Kathleen (Richard) Doine of Butler, Wisconsin, eleven grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Monday, September 27, 2004, from 10:00 – 11:00a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Florence, Wisconsin. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Father Michael Betley will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Commonwealth, Wisconsin.
