Obituary

Evelyn C. Briggs, 98, of Niagara, passed away Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at Golden Living Center, Florence. She was born August 27, 1914, in Stanley, Wis., the oldest child of the late Jacob and Mona (Flatt) Massage. When she was still a toddler, the family moved to Iron Mountain where her mother had grown up and her grandparents, Arthur and Elzabeth Flatt lived. Evelyn graduated from Iron Mountain High School, Class of 1932, and then attended the Dundon School of Business. She held several positions as book-keeper in Iron Mountain, Detroit, and Marquette, Mich., during her life. In 1936, she married Arthur Curtis. He preceded her in death in 1965. In 1978, she married Chester Briggs in Marquette. She and Chester moved to Niagara in 1980, where they resided until the fall of 2011, when they became residents at the Golden Living Center. During their retirement, they enjoyed traveling to visit their children in California, Texas, and Tennesee. Evelyn was a member of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and the White Shrine. She enjoyed reading and shopping. She is survived by her husband, Chester Briggs; two daughters, Janet Turriff, Saratoga, Calif., Mary Elizabeth (Anthony) Azevedo, Oceanside, Calif.; one son, Robert (Judith) Briggs, Crystal Falls, Mich.; one daughter-in-law, Susan Curtis; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and first husband, Evelyn was preceded by one son, Thomas Curtis; one brother, Robert Massage; two sisters, Elizabeth Briggs, Marion Khoury; and one son-in-law, Lowell Turriff. Private memorial services are being held at a later date. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Iron Mountain.
