Obituary

Evelyn Mae (Purchis) Bertoni, 91, former resident of Victorian Heights Assisted Living and most recently the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls, passed away December 29, 2006, at her daughter's home at Duck Lake in the Upper Peninsula surrounded by loving family members, thanks to the resources of the Iron County Community Hospital Hospice Program. Born in Petoskey, Michigan on July 25, 1915, Evelyn was the middle daughter of Owen Spencer Purchis and Viola Schaefer Purchis. Her parents and sisters, Leah Purchis Gilbert Weed and Jeanette (Klaus) Dautermann, precede her in death. Evelyn attended elementary schools in Lansing, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio and graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1933. Following graduation, she was employed by Edwards Brothers in Ann Arbor and then by Cushing-Malloy in the late 1940s. She was a member of the Michigan Choral Union in the 1930s and, after her marriage in 1938, a faithful member of St. Thomas Church and choir. In the early 1950s, Andrew and Evelyn moved their family to Northville, Michigan. She was an active member of Our Lady of Victory Church and Mother's Club in Northville. She continued her employment with Cushing-Malloy until the early 1980s, commuting to Ann Arbor daily while raising her four children. Following retirement, the couple returned to Ann Arbor where they had met and married. They attended St. Francis church where Evelyn was again a member of the choir. Following her husband's death, Evelyn moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to be closer to her two daughters. Evelyn was the devoted wife of the late Andrew, loving mother of Giannine (Don) Perigo, Corinne (Fred) Duerkop, Dr. John (Carol) Bertoni, and James (Teri) Bertoni. Doting grandmother of Michael (Monica) Perigo, Anne Perigo, Andy (Jenny) Duerkop, Scott (Cara) Duerkop, and Molly Duerkop; and Dawn, James, Susan, Elizabeth, and Julie Bertoni. Fond great-grandmother of Charlie, William, Sasha, Shauna, Jill, Erick, Grace, and Katherine She will be missed by many, including her brother-in-law, Richard Bertoni, sisters-in-law Marguerite (Dr. William) Oliver, Nancy (John) Lager Hansen, brother-in-law Klaus Dautermann and many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass is scheduled to be celebrated at St. Francis Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
