Obituary

Eugene "Fitz" Fitzgerald, 85, of Kingsford, passed away Saturday, February 12, 2011, at Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain. Gene was born on February 21, 1925 in Marquette, Mich., son of the late James and Agnes (Johnson) Fitzgerald. At a young age he moved to Newberry where he attended school. He married Pearl Barker on October 1, 1954. They resided in Newberry for a few years before moving to Kingsford in 1959. Gene worked as a cook at the Oscar G. Johnson Veteran Hospital for many years, retiring in the early 1980s. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting and was a big story teller. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Gene is survived by his wife, Pearl; three sons, George (Lynn) Fitzgerald, Escanaba, Samuel "Herb" (Margaret) Lennox, Germfask, Mich., Tim (Karen) Sommers, Pickney, Mich.; two daughters, Donna Applin, Iron Mountain, Alva Fox, Kingsford; grandchildren, Kirsten Applin, Iron Mountain, April (Edward) Turner, Iron Mountain, and numerous other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marjory Lee; two brothers, Robert and James Fitzgerald. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 16, 2011, 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Elder David Carpenter will officiate. Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens. A memorial will be established in his memory.
