Ethel L. Gummin, 91, of Florence was born to eternal peace on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at the Golden Living Center, Florence.
Daughter of the late Herman and Gertrude (Nau) Meyers, Ethel began this life April 16, 1923, in Florence.
She grew up in Florence and graduated from Florence High School, Class of 1941. Ethel went on to graduate from the Marinette Teaching Normal where she received her certification in Education. She later earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Northern Michigan University. Ethel was a lifelong learner, educator and lover of knowledge, who inspired more than 700 pupils, including her own children and grandchildren, over her expansive career.
She married Alfred Gummin on June 21, 1943, in Marinette, Wis.; he preceded her in death July 21, 2011. Ethel and Al first resided on the Gummin family farm in Pound, Wis. where her teaching career began in a one room school house, before moving to Hermansville, Mich. They resided in the Hermansville area for 8 years where she continued to teach and began raising her family before relocating to Northlake, Ill. In 1966, they moved to Florence. She worked as an elementary school teacher in Florence for 22 years before retiring in 1990. Ethel was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Florence, serving as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. She was a founding member of the Florence chapter of ARC, member of the Florence Historical Society and enjoyed archiving and genealogy. She was an avid volunteer for many activities, especially for the ARC and Golden Living Center.
Ethel is survived by four sons, Ronnie Gummin, Florence, Darryl Gummin, Florence, Mark (Gail) Gummin, Silverton, Ore. and David (Sandra) Gummin, Elm Grove, Wis.; one daughter, Janice Roberts, Spread Eagle, Wis.; one brother, Richard (Nora) Meyers, Florence; one sister, Mary (Homer) Dunkes, Norway, Mich; one brother-in-law, Arthur (Dorothy) Gummin, Pound, Wis; eight grandchildren, Nancy, Mathew (Kerri), Angela, Michael, Scott, Deon, Christian and Marisa; seven great-grandchildren, Caleb, Kenzi, Mason, Alexandra, Lauren, Michael and Clayton and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Al and her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved eldest son, Arlyn (Carmen) Gummin.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 26, 2014, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Florence. Funeral Services will be Friday, 6:00 p.m. at the church. Rev. Doug Johnson will officiate.
The family has chosen the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home, Florence to honor Ethel's Legacy of Life.
