Obituary

Amasa: Elma M. Peltonen, age 100, of Amasa, Michigan, died Saturday, October 25, 2003, at the Iron County Hospital in Iron River, Michigan. Elma was born on March 21, 1903, the daughter of the late Matt and Susanna (Alongo) Maki. She attended Amasa schools. In 1920, she married Nestor Holm, who preceded her in death in March, 1924. In May, 1925, she married Victor Peltonen, who preceded her in death in January, 1970. After retirement from the family farm in 1955, she graduated as an LPN from Northern Michigan University and worked at the Crystal Falls Hospital, Laturi Nursing Home in Iron River, and was director of the Amasa Area Senior Citizens Center. She was active in Sion Lutheran Church, which coincidentally turned 100 this year also. She became Sion's organist at 15 and continued playing until she was 88. She was a choir director, Luther League leader, Sunday school teacher and held various council positions. She was currently the vice president of the Ladies Aid. Other organizations Elma was active in were Women's Civic Club, Girl Scout Council, P.T.A., Farm Hall Association and the Net River Association. She continued to drive her own car until 1998, lunched at the Amasa Senior Center, and attended church regularly until breaking her arm in a fall in her home. She was rehabilitating at the Crystal Manor and anxiously waiting to go home and continue her round of activities. She is survived by one daughter, Anita (David) Holmes of Amasa, twenty-one grandchildren, fifty-five great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren. Elma was preceded by two sisters, Katherine Pulchevic and Aileen Murray, a brother Isaac Maki, four daughters, Ruth Etienne, Mayme Bohn, Katherine Etienne, and Lillian Maki, one son Richard Peltonen, and four grandsons. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 29, 2003, from 10 – 11AM at Sion Lutheran Church in Amasa, Michigan. Funeral services will be Wednesday, 11:00A.M. at Sion Lutheran Church. Pastor Mark Reinsch will officiate. Burial will be in Hematite Township Cemetery in Amasa. Memorials can be made to Sion Lutheran Church of Amasa in Elma's memory.
