OBITUARY
Ellen Louise Wallenfang, neé West, age 85, died early Wednesday morning, April 13, 2005, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, following a short illness. She was a long time resident of Niagara and most recently of Kingsford.
Ellen was the youngest of seven children of Jonas West and Lovisa (Anderson) West and was born in Iron Mountain on January 30, 1920. She grew up in Niagara Township, graduating from Niagara High School in 1936.
Following college training at the then Normal School in Marinette, she taught school in Niagara and Pound, Wisconsin for several years until her marriage to Lee Wallenfang on December 30, 1941. For the first two years after their marriage she and Lee lived at a number of Army bases, in Georgia and California. When he went to the Philippines in World War II, she returned to the Niagara area.
Besides faith and family, a powerful passion in her life was music. By age 12 she was an accomplished piano player, and gave private piano lessons to as many as 40 students at a time throughout her adult life. Her students won many medals and awards, but most importantly, an appreciation of music. She was the organist for many years at St. Anthony's Church in Niagara and also played periodically for other churches and events in the area.
In recent years she organized and accompanied the singing groups "The Smile Awhiles and Golden Throats" who performed at area nursing homes and other events. Her music was a pastime as well as a business and many a social event ended with her leading the group in song.
A later highlight of her life was a 1997 trip to Scandinavia with her children, where she had the opportunity to visit the towns near Vaasa, Finland where her parents had been born and raised.
Besides music, she also enjoyed the game of golf and was constantly involved in planning family reunions and activities. She is survived by two children, Ronald (Mary Ann) of Germantown, Wisconsin and Lisa (Bob) Steeno of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one son, John; and by five brothers and one sister.
She was a long time member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Niagara and also a member of St. Anthony's Council of Catholic Women.
