Obituary

Elaine Davis, 93, of Crystal Falls, passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls. She was born December 19, 1917, in Crystal Falls, daughter of the late Charles and Augusta (Johnson) Peterson. Elaine was the daughter of one of the pioneer families of Crystal Falls, and was raised on a farm west of the city. On October 18, 1941, she married Warren Thomas Davis in Crystal Falls. He preceded her in death. Elaine attended Michigan State University after graduation from high school, and used the acquired skills to teach canning and food preservation during World War II. Other interests in this area included her many years of involvement in the Iron County 4-H and a love of sewing and knitting. Elaine and her husband, Warren, owned and operated Davis' Drive In from 1958 to 1977, and their business sponsored baseball teams in the community. She and her husband were avid dancers and members of various dance clubs during their years together. Elaine was a long-time member of the United Lutheran Church and an active member of the Crystal Falls Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed outdoor activities with a special love of walking. Later in life, she became active in running events in the UP. Elaine ran her last 5 K race in 2002, at the age of 86 and continues to hold the record for that age group in the "Run Your Bass Off " race in Crystal Falls. She was an avid supporter of Forest Park High School sports activities. Elaine was recognized by the community as "Mother of the Year" and with her husband, Warren, as "Citizens of the Year" in 1977. Survivors include two daughters, Jean E. (James) Flood, Medford, Wis., Sally R. (David) Davis-Campana, Marquette; three sons, Thomas R. (Kim) Davis, Rhinelander, Wis., Robert W. (Marjean) Davis, Cedarburg, Wis., Charles A. (LeeAnn) Davis, Crystal Falls; ten grandchildren, Allison Rudich, Andy Davis, Brian, David, Adam, and Dennis Flood, Katherine and Michael Campana, Brent and Leah Davis; five great-grandchildren, Grayson Rudich, Josephine, Warren, Spencer, and Weston Flood. She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Harold, Bertal, Rubert, and Melvin Peterson; two sisters, Sylvia Lindquist and Evelyn Easley. The visitation will be Saturday, January 1, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls, with an O.E.S. Memorial Service at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 2, 2011, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at United Lutheran Church, Crystal Falls. The funeral service will be 12:00 p.m., Sunday at the church. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Elaine's memory to Fortune Lake Bible Camp, the Crystal Falls Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, the Alzheimer's Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
