Douglas G. Villa passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2012, at ManorCare Nursing and Rehab Center surrounded by his loving family. He most recently celebrated his 86th birthday. Doug battled Parkinson's Disease for the past 10 years.
He was born April 26, 1926, in Iron Mountain son of the late Lewis J. and Julia (Reggetts) Villa. He graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1944. After graduating, he attended Michigan Technological University, and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Northern Michigan University. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during World War II and was honorably discharged.
Doug married his high school sweetheart, Lucille Broullire, on June 21, 1947. They were blessed with six children.
He was a very humble man who touched many lives with his wisdom, integrity, and high moral values. Doug's talents allowed him to build his own home, cottage, and boat. He passed on his skills to family and students alike.
Doug began his teaching career at Longfellow School in Foster City and then taught Industrial Arts for 37 years in the Iron Mountain School System. Each year his students showed their respect by wearing sport coats to receive their Vocational certificates at the Iron Mountain High School Awards Ceremony.
He was well known among the residents of the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes as the "go to" person for servicing their boats at the Marina. Doug enjoyed working Saturdays and summers there for many years.
After retirement, Doug and Lucille enjoyed spending winters at the Tree Lakes Resort in Palmetto, Fla.
He loved spending time outdoors, at his cottage on the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes, walking and riding his bike.
Doug was a Ham radio operator and proudly displayed his WA8HBP call letters on his license plate. He used his Ham radio skills by volunteering his time to raise funds during the March of Dimes telethon.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Bishop Baraga Council 1585 of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille; they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in June. He is also survived by six children, Dr. Douglas L. (Kay) Villa, Iron Mountain, Sandra (Tom Mogush) Villa-Mogush, Marquette, Terry (Colleen) Villa, Virginia Minn., Susan (Dan) Fallon, Neenah Wis., Sally (Tom) Groleau, Salem, Wis., and Sara (David) Michals, Libertyville Ill.; 13 grandchildren, Nicole (Zach) Smith, Heather Villa, Julia Villa, Kalyn Villa, Jacki Villa, Mike Villa, Brian Villa, Ryan Fallon, Megan Fallon, Joseph Groleau, Jonathan Groleau, Samantha Michals, and Ashley Mogush; 1 great-grandchild, Olivia Smith and another due in May.
Along with his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Arbogast.
The visitation will be Wednesday, May 2, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. The Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary Wednesday, 9:40 a.m. at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek and Rev. Raymond Valerio will concelebrate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain. The American Legion Uren-Cooper Johnson Post No. 50 will accord military honors at graveside.
