Douglas J. Payette, 71, of Niagara, passed away Saturday, October 11, 2014, at his home.
He was born March 25, 1943, in Niagara, son of the late Clarence and Rosella (Neveau) Payette.
Doug grew up in Aurora, Wis., and graduated from Florence High School. He went to work for George Lofstrom at the Shell Gas Station where he drove semi delivering oil to customers. Doug worked for his brothers Don and Butch at the C&R Bar in Aurora for many years, in the mid-eighties he managed Schanks Bar, Niagara and also worked for Ed Neuen's Excavating. In 1988, he bought the bowling alley in Niagara and re-named it Doug's Hilltop Lanes and Lounge, which he operated until 2013, when he sold it on the 25th Anniversary to his cousin Brock Payette and friend Gary Unrein.
He was an avid race car enthusiast sponsoring many drivers at the Norway Speedway, over the years. Doug attended ten consecutive Daytona 500 races. He enjoyed country music and attended many Hodag Country Music Festivals in Rhinelander, Wis. and the Porterfield Country Music Festivals. Doug was an active member of the Niagara Lion's Club organizing events such as the Miss Niagara float, the classic car show and the Niagara Lion's Club picnic. He was a passionate supporter of Niagara Badger sporting events, hosting athletes and fans alike, at Doug's to prepare for or celebrate Badger games. If there was a fan bus, Doug's Hilltop was the place all fans would gather at before leaving. For years Doug drove his motorhome full of fans to away games in a show of Badger pride. He was a community man who was always there to lend a hand, cut grass or grill some food. He was Uncle Doug to many children.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Pat; three daughters, Michelle (Steve) Coughlin, Kingsford, Mich., Robin (Nathan) Normand, Fond du Lac, Wis. and Rachel (Dennis) Carver, Oak Creek, Wis.; one brother, Butch Payette, Aurora; four grandchildren, Jacob Coughlin, Vyla Shea, Evalyn Shea and Santina, Carver and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Payette and one sister, Doreen Mohr.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 16, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Niagara Chapel. The Funeral Service will be held Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Fr. Matt Settle will officiate. Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery, Niagara.
A memorial will be established in Doug's memory.
The family has chosen the Jacobs Funeral Home, Niagara Chapel to honor Doug's Legacy of Life.
