Obituary

Doris (Cowie) (Nabbefeld) LaLiberte of Niagara, our dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, GG, passed away on Feb. 22, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital, one month short of 99 years. She was born, the youngest of 8, to James and Bertha Cowie (pronounced Cooey), in Amberg, Wis. on March 20, 1915. Doris attended a one room school that her father was instrumental in creating, until 2nd grade, when the family moved to Niagara. She graduated in 1931 as class valedictorian, and immediately went to work for Dr. DeSalvo. Doris joined Kimberly Clark Paper Corp. in 1936, later Pentair, and advanced there until retiring in 1977. She was the first woman to become a member of management in KC, and her boss, Cliff Murray, informed everyone that she was to be treated as a Lady. Doris married Carl (Jim) Nabbefeld, on June 20, 1942, and had two children, Norman and David. Carl preceded her in death in 1973, and Norman in1998. In September 1989, she married Roland LaLiberte, who preceded her in death in 1996. During the war years, she was named to the Rationing Board, which proved to be "very interesting". Doris was secretary of the original War Chest, which later became the Niagara Community Chest, a position she held for ten years. She was a member of: the American Legion Cretton-Tutas Post No. 136 Auxiliary for fifty-five years, the Niagara Library Board, the Maryhill Manor Auxiliary, St. Anthony's Parish (converted in 1956) and a Charter Member of The Friends of the Library. She was an active bowler and along with Marge Gehring, originated Junior Bowling in Niagara. Doris bowled in 39 Wisconsin State Tournaments and was named Grand Duchess of the Wisconsin Bowling Association in 1985. She was a member of the first class of ladies inducted into the Tri-County Hall of Fame for bowlers, and held every office in the Niagara Women's League over a period of forty years. Doris continued to bowl in two leagues until hip surgery forced her to retire in 1989. Her team, for nearly forty years included Florence Steeno Kenville, Joyce Hendricks Smith, Ellen Frizanka Wright and Adelaide Norman Piche. Doris traveled to many places, including Europe, the Caribbean, most of the US and parts of Canada. She accomplished a lifelong dream in 2006, when she visited Ireland and especially Aberdeen, Scotland, where her father was born. She was an avid reader, enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, was an accomplished knitter making baby blankets/clothes, hand towels etc. and over one hundred afghans, for family and friends. Doris was an active golfer and member of Pine Grove Country Club since the 1950s. The hip surgery slowed her down, but she golfed until the age of 92. In addition to her son David, she is survived by two daughters-in-law, Sandy and Yvonne; two granddaughters, Cathy (Kevin) McManus and Susan (Rich) Fox; one grandson, Kurt (Lisa) Nabbefeld; three step-sons, Donald LaLiberte, David (Nancy) LaLiberte, and Terry (Emily) LaLiberte; four step-grandchildren, Jon LaLiberte, Meaghan, Gina and Dana LaLiberte; one sister-in-law, Judith Cowie; three great-grandchildren, Mason Gyllenberg-Nabbefeld, Zachary and Montana Fox; three step-great grandchildren, Maggie, Teri, and Jeri McManus, as well as several nieces, nephews, step-nieces and step-nephews.
