Donald W. Vassar, 84, of Florence, Wis., passed away peacefully Sunday, July 29, 2007, at his home.
Donald was born August, 25, 1922, in Alpha, Mich., son of the late Lawrence and Irene (Argo) Vassar. He married Marion Johnson on May 28, 1949.
He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, having served as a corporal in WWII in Normandy, northern France, Rhineland, and central Europe. Donald received numerous medals and decorations. He worked as a truck driver for Luke Bros. Trucking and was a well-known logger and woodsman. Donald also loved cutting firewood and was seen most times working on his woodpile. He also loved to trout fish and spend time with his children, grandchildren, and his special dog, Frankie.
Donald is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marion; 12 children, Vivian (Jim) Johnson, Crystal Falls, Mich., Lloyd (Josette) Vassar, Greendale, Wis., Ron Vassar, Florence, Donna (Jim) Gunville, Niagara, Wis., Debbie (John) Joslyn, Thomasville, Ga., Gary Vassar, Kingsford, Mich., Donald (Paula) Vassar, Florence, Rudy (Lisa) Vassar, Spread Eagle, Wis., Lawrence (Lauri) Vassar, Florence, Mary (Matt) D'Agostino, Florence, Steve Vassar, Florence, Neil Vassar, Florence; five sisters, Barb (John) D'Agostino, Alice (Harold) Westman, Elaine Capra, Betty (Ed) Lefluer, Marlene (Norm) Robinson; one brother, Russell Vassar; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Besides his parents, Donald was preceded in death by one brother, Arly Vassar.
Visitation will be Wednesday, August 1, 2007, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home, Florence. American Legion Post No. 211 will offer a veteran's memorial service at 6:45 pm, Wednesday. The funeral service will be Wednesday, 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Fr. Michael Betley will officiate.
