Donald Ring, 85, of Iron Mountain, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2009, at his home. He was born April 12, 1924, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Robert and Frances (Diedrich) Ring. Donald attended Iron Mountain High School and graduated Class of 1942. After graduating, he entered the United States Army and served for three years. Donald served in both Africa and Italy, receiving the Silver Star for Valor. He was honorably discharged in 1945. On May 8, 1948, Donald married the former Betty Howart at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. He converted to Catholicism 60 years ago and has been an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Donald was employed at the Niagara Paper Mill for 40 years, and retired in 1986. After his retirement, Donald and Betty spent their winters in Florida for 20 years. Donald was an avid sportsman, he loved all sports. He participated in basketball, baseball, softball, bowling, and golf. Donald was a past member of Oak Crest Golf Club. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty; two sons, Richard L. (Caryl) Ring, Don H (Carrie) Ring; five grandchildren, Scott (Angela) Ring, Susan (Rob) LaCrosse, Sarah, Nicole, Michael Ring; two brothers, Robert (LaVerne) Ring, Marquette, Mich., Bruce (Lois) Ring, Iron Mountain; four sisters, Arlene (William) Ullrich, Wadsworth, Ill., Delores Larson, Grand Rapids, Mich., Cynthia Good, Tempe, Ariz., and Alice (Ray) Person, Iron Mountain.
