Obituary

Donald William Niven, 82, Dunbar, Wis., passed away Monday, November 10, 2008, at his home, where he was born. He was born July 20, 1926, in Dunbar, son of the late William and Mary (Ovans) Niven. Donald served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. During his tour of duty in the Korean War, he fought in the battles of Heartbreak Ridge and Bloody Ridge. He was awarded a Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star and a UN Service Medal for his honorable service. Donald was a dairy farmer all his life, working on the family farm in Dunbar. He enjoyed spending time with family and his canine companions. Donald was always ready with a friendly pat for the dogs and candy for the kids. Andrew and Sam, the latest generation of farmers, provided him with many hours of entertainment. He is survived by an older brother, David Niven; a younger sister, Dorothy (Niven) Zovnic; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, great-grandnephews; and special nephews, Lee Niven, Brian Niven, Will Niven, Bill Dicke, Paul Dicke, Roy Nerbun, who spent many good times with Uncle Donald on snowmobiles, 4-wheelers, hunting, fishing, and just telling tales to each other. Donald was preceded in death by two brothers, Gordon (Wilma), Hugh (Edna); one sister, Marjorie (Francis) Nerbun; brother-in-law, Stephen Zovnic; and sister-in-law, Alice (Bryant) Niven.
