Donald Kenneth Hockberger, 57, of Kingsford, passed away September 17, 2007, at his home.
He was born March 18, 1950, in Billings, Montana, son of the late William and Louisiana (Motley) Hockberger.
His family moved to Summit, New Jersey, where he attended school, was a volunteer assistant swim instructor at the YMCA, learned to shoot at the Police Athletic League, and did yard work and snow clearing for neighborhood residents. He particularly liked tree work. He was a rare man lacking any trace of unkindness toward anyone or any creature.
Don lived in the UP since 1987, first in Alpha, then Iron River, and for the past eight years in Kingsford. He worked part-time at TRICO doing upkeep at the Iron Mountain Senior Center and was a regular at the Phoenix Center, Iron Mountain.
Survivors include, two brothers, Carl (Mindi, and six children), Iron River, Mich., and Bill (Joanne), University Park, Maryland.
There will be an opportunity for Don's friends and family to remember him together, Wednesday, September 26, in the Conference Room of the new Country Inn & Suites in Iron Mountain (across from Wal-Mart). There will be light refreshments starting at 12:30, a brief talk at 1:30 by Ted Kurtz, of Crystal Falls, and then remembrances about Don by friends and family.
