Donald T. Greene, age 80 of Niagara, Wisconsin, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2006, at his home in Niagara.
Donald was born on February 7, 1926, in Niagara, Wis., son of the late Howard and Pearle (LaCosse) Greene.
He was a graduate of Niagara High School and later served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943-1946 as a nose gunner on B-24 Liberator. He served in the European Theatre of Operations, trained in Wala Wala, Washington, and was stationed in occupied Germany after the war.
Donald married Marjorie J. Larson on December 29, 1948, in Niagara, Wis. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. He was a carpenter in the Niagara Paper Mill from 1947-1971. Donald earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education and Master's Degrees in Education and Administration from Northern Michigan University. He went on to teach in the Breitung Township School District as an elementary teacher from 1971 until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the Niagara School Board for many years. Donald was an active member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Niagara. He served on the Finance Committee at the church and was a member of the Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus. Donald was the Commander of the VFW Niagara Post, Chaplain of the Amberg VFW Post, and Associate Representative of the VFW of Wisconsin at the V.A. Hospital in Iron Mountain, Mich. where he volunteered countless hours. Donald also spent many hours counseling cancer patients. He was a member of MARSP (Michigan Area Retired School Personnel Association). Among the hobbies he enjoyed were reading, ski jumping, woodworking, hiking, gardening, flowers, the outdoors, and airplanes. He dearly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Donald is survived by his wife, Marjorie; one son, Dr. Gary (Naomi) Greene of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three daughters, Kathryn (David) Wagner of Niagara; Karen (Jeffrey Steiner) Greene of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Rebecca (Bruce) O'Brien of San Diego, Calif. His surviving grandchildren are Sara (Chris) Londo, Chandra (Samuel) Kidd, Alexander Steiner; Scott, Ben, and Emily Greene; and Eric, Bradley, and Samantha O'Brien.
Besides his parents Donald was preceded in death by his brother Keith Greene in 1977.
Visitation will be Saturday, September 23, 2006, from 9 – 11a.m., at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Niagara. The VFW of Niagara and the VFW from Amberg will offer a Veterans Memorial Service at 10:45 a.m. at the church. The Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Church. Father Michael Betley will officiate. Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery.
