Obituary

Domenic Spigarelli, 90, of Iron Mountain, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at his home at Evergreen Apartments. He was born March 17, 1918, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Matteo and Josephine (Mickeletti) Spigarelli. He married the former Virginia Ready on January 12, 1946. She preceded him in death on November 24, 2006. After serving in the US Army during World War II and The Korean Conflict, most of his life, "Spig" worked as a machinist at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Iron Mountain. He was talented with machinery and appliances, and was trained as a machinist in the Army. I remember saying: "My Daddy can fix anything!" Domenic was a true outdoorsman, he liked nothing better than to be in the woods hunting deer, partridge, or rabbit. "Zio" (Uncle) loved being at camp with the guys. In later years, he was the camp cook, using recipes that he and Virginia, had written down. He especially loved being in the woods with his beagles and running them in AKC Field Trials; his prized Spig's Tippy became a Field Champion due to all the hard work and time Domenic spent training him. He was often the life of the party with his many tales of experiences in the woods, at camp and life on the North Side of Iron Mountain. Singing "The Little Pig" in Italian was a family favorite too. He even sang it in a restaurant when we visited Rome. Domenic also liked to play his harmonica. He was much-loved by family members on both sides. The Readys thought it was cool to have an Italian in the family. He loved eating Italian food prepared by his wife, Virginia, who learned from his mother Josephina "Pappa" Spigarelli. Domenic is survived by his daughter, Christine and her husband, Robert Armstrong; three nephews, Al (Donna) Spigarelli, Ron (Bonnie) DeCremer, Paul (Linda) Spigarelli; five nieces Barbara (Raymond) Broullire, Peggy (Dan) Hansen, Jeanne (Rob) Mellon, Sandy (Nick) Cramer, Joannie (Bob) Fayas; his Godson, David (Terri) Spigarelli; and all the members of their families. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Americo & Tony; one sister, Marie DeCremer; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law of the Ready family; one niece, Nancy (DeCremer) Eslinger; two nephews, Don Spigarelli, Bruce Spigarelli; three great-nephews, Gary Spigarelli, Ron "Chip" DeCremer, Jr., Paul Buehler; one great-great-nephew Anthony Spigarelli; and many old friends in Florida and Iron Mountain, most memorable being, Gino Lupini. We are blessed to have had him in our lives for such a long period of time. He fought the good fight ever since being torpedoed while on a US Army ship by the Japanese, escaping drowning on an icy river while hunting and surviving many heart issues. Virginia always said "He had nine lives & has used them all." We will remember "Zio" with a twinkle in his eye. In lieu of flowers, the family will make a donation in Domenic's name to the Spring Lake Animal Shelter building fund. Their new building will be near the Northland Beagle Club, where Domenic ran his dogs.
