David Neal Hanley, 84, of Iron Mountain, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015, peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.
He was born November 3, 1930, in Ironwood, Mich., son of the late John and Margaret (Graykowski) Hanley.
David grew up in Ironwood. He served in the United States Army, from 1952 to 1954, during the Korean War. David married Mary Kotlowski on February 16, 1952, in Waukegan, Ill.; she preceded him in death on January 19, 2009. He and Mary lived in Milwaukee, Wis., Iron River, California, Munising, Mich., Stambaugh, Mich., and Niagara, Wis., before moving to Iron Mountain in 1977. David was employed by the State of Michigan as a Social Worker.
While serving in the Army, David was honored to chauffer delegates and Ambassadors including Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt where he transported her to headquarters and The Mount Fuji Hotel. Awards he received while serving included The National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean Service Ribbon. Upon return from Korea, he brought home a military slogan "Cut a Chogie" which means time to leave. This became one of his trademark sayings. His favorite moment upon returning from the service was seeing the Golden Gate Bridge.
David enjoyed gardening, camping, telling stories, fly fishing, watching wildlife, feeding the deer, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by four sons, David Scott (Anne) Hanley, Dunnellon, Fla., Shaughn Hanley, Green Bay, Wis., Shane Hanley, Ky., and Tim (Christine) Hanley, Kingsford, Mich.; six daughters, Sheri (John) Jaramillo, Kittitas, Wash., Lena (Bob) Seppala, Iron Mountain, Bonnie (Brian) Pionke, Milwaukee, Karen (Bill) Kaczmarowski, Manitowoc, Wis., Robin (Bill) Ritchie, Portage, Mich., and Valerie (David) Carpenter, Iron Mountain; one brother, John (Janice) Hanley, Ironwood; four sisters, Kathleen Tenlen, Ironwood, Judy (Buzz) Summers, Iron River, Jeanne Karr, Marquette, Mich., and Adriane (Don) Bartels, Lakewood, Wis.; twenty one grandchildren, Johnny, Shena, and Jamie Jaramillo, Traci (Patrick) Prothro, Reya (Greg) Dixon, Shelly (Xavier) Cavazos, Steven (Billie) Kurtz, Jessica (Matt) Olmsted, Kelly (Mitch) Clark, Adam Pionke, Celeste (Mike) Jantz, Ryan (Michelle) Kaczmarowski, Michelle (Scott) Hanley, Aimee Hanley, Kaitlyn Hanley, Heather (Jim) Lieburn, Marissa (Zach) Miner, Izzy Ritchie, Jake (Michelle) Carpenter, Andrew (Shaya) Carpenter, and Alex Hanley, many great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife of 56 years, Mary, he was preceded in death by one sister, Eileen Hanley.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 26, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. The Iron Mountain American Legion Uren-Cooper Johnson Post No. 50 will conduct Military Honors, Wednesday, 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home. The Funeral Service will be Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.
