Darcia R. Johnson, 62, Florence, Wis., passed away Monday, March 17, 2008, at Dickinson County Hospital, Iron Mountain, Mich., after a valiant battle with cancer.
She was born May 11, 1945, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Henry (Cotton) and June (Fisher) VanHaute. On January 28, 1967, in Palmer, Alaska she married Philip Johnson.
Darcia was a graduate of Kingsford High School, Kingsford, Mich., class of 1963. She was instrumental in the formation of the Florence County Library, worked for the library and as a secretary for the Florence Mining News. She enjoyed gardening in her greenhouse, bird and wildlife watching, and especially spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband Philip Johnson, Florence; one daughter, Sue Ann (Joe) Valdrow, North Pole, Alaska; two sons, John (Shelly) Johnson, Florence, Jess (Beth) Johnson, New Windsor, N.Y.; step-mother, Dorothy VanHaute, Kingsford; six grandchildren, Jamie, Bailey, Olivia, Matthew, Wade, Blake; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one infant son, Kenneth Paul, and two brothers, Terry Dean VanHaute and his twin, Kerry Don VanHaute.
Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Florence. Rev. Michael Betley and Sr. Marla Clercx will officiate. The family will receive friends at a luncheon following services at the church. Inurnment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Commonwealth.
