Charles F. "Charlie" Dickinson, 87, of Iron Mountain, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2008, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, Iron Mountain.
He was born July 1, 1921, in Charles City, Iowa, son of the late Charles E. and Sarah (Mathison) Dickinson. Charlie grew up in Kenosha, Wis., in the Lincoln Park area during the Great Depression. He married the former Martha Miles on June 16, 1973, in Kenosha. They lived in Kenosha before moving to Woodruff, Wis. in 1985, and eventually to Iron Mountain in 1999.
Charlie spent three years in the Civilian Conservation Corps serving in various locations throughout Northern Wisconsin before enlisting in the United States Army. While in the army, Charlie served in the Phillipines and New Guinea, and was honorably discharged in 1945.
He was a HAM Radio enthusiast for over 50 years - W9UOI. Charlie was active in radio clubs in Kenosha, Woodruff, Wis., and in the Upper Peninsula. He was also active in Civil Defense activities in the early 1960's, and was a lifetime member of the VFW. Charlie worked as a TV and radio repairman in Kenosha, specializing in 2-way and marine radio repair. He also worked as an electrician for American Motors, later Chrysler, for 20 years, retiring in 1984.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Martha; four sons, Charles W. Dickinson, Kenosha, Leif Dickinson, Kenosha, David Dickinson, Menomonee Falls, Wis., Paul Dickinson, Chicago, Ill.; one daughter, Linda Mathey, Kenosha; three step-sons, Larry Rickman, Sturtevant, Wis., Richard Osborn, Waunakee, Wis., Robert Osborn, Longmont, Colo.; two step-daughters, Stella Snelson, Clute, Tex., Bonnie Dix, Luray, Tenn.; 20 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Charlie was an excellent husband, father, and gifted storyteller. "Charlie was a man of impeccable character."
