Charles R. Benzie, 76, of Felch, Michigan, passed away at his daughter's home in Norway, Monday, February 27, 2006, surrounded by his family.
He was born January 19, 1930, in Green Bay, Wis., son of the late Raymond B. and Mary
M. (Gennara) Benzie. He married Beverly (Betsy) Anderson on August 30th, 1952. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2002, where they renewed their vows.
Charlie served in the United States Marine Corp. during the Korean Conflict. Charlie's whole life was devoted to his family and his love for ski jumping. He was honored with a life membership to the Kiwanis Ski Club for many years of dedication. He spent numerous hours on hill preparation here at Pine Mountain as well as many other ski jumping hills throughout the United States. Charlie served on the hill crew that prepared the ski jumps for the 1980 winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. He will be forever remembered for the many different styles of pins that he wore on his cap,and by everyone who was involved with ski jumping. He enjoyed spending time with his family at Six Mile Lake, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, where he enjoyed swimming, snorkeling, and especially his ski water slide that he built.
He worked by his Dad's side for 11 years at Bacco & Son, then later went to work at the Groveland Mine and retired from there.
Charlie spent many hours fixing things in his barn and was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He enjoyed playing and listening to Country Music and spending time in the sun. For many years, Charlie along with his wife Betsy, have fond memories of spending time with family and friends during the winter months in Arizona He was also an active member of the VFW Post 4803 of Felch.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betsy, two sons; John Raymond Benzie and his daughter Raylin, Tony Arthur Benzie and his son Matthew Scott; two daughters Lori Rae Dixon and her children Jared Raymond, Truman Lee and Rashael Lynn, Lynn (Michael) Schultz and their children Jerimiah James, Lydia (Brian) Rittenhouse, Aidan Michael, Alexander David and Nathan Michael and one sister Charolette (Keith)Phillips of Quinnesec.
Visitation will be Friday, March 3, 2006, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be Friday, 4:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home. Rev. Doug Johnson will officiate.
