Celia G. Waite, age 96, passed away Sunday, January 28, 2007, at the Florence Villa Nursing Center in Florence.
She was born October 19, 1910, in Crystal Falls, Mich., daughter of the late Stanley and Julia (Zemska) Rachwal. She married Raymond Waite on June 3, 1930. He preceded her in death on August 26, 1992 .
Celia attended school in Alpha, Mich. She moved to Florence in 1947, where she and her husband, Ray, bought the Chatterbox which they ran until 1963. During that time they installed the first bowling alley in town. Before the bowling alley, they had the only ice house in town, rental rooms were on the second floor which catered to transients and the lumberjacks in the area.
She and Ray retired in 1963. They cut hundreds of cords of firewood each year for 25 years. After Ray passed away, she continued to cut wood with her son Allen, and did so until three years ago. Celia enjoyed fishing, gardening, picking berries, cooking, knitting, cutting wood, planting and pruning Christmas trees.
She is survived by one daughter, June (Claude) Rochon, Ark.; one son, Allen (Judy) Waite, Florence; 6 grandchildren, Mary Kaye (Rochon) Jewart, Julie (Bob) Van Voorhees, David (Pam) Rochon, Tracy (Jeff) Voegtline, Scott (Shirley) Waite, Jeff Waite; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Celia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray; two sisters, Mary Elczuk, Constance Phillips; five brothers, Tony, Walter, John, Stanley, and Frank.
Per Celia's request, there will be no visitation. A memorial service honoring her life will be held in spring.
