Catherine L. Hannula, 77, of Iron Mountain, passed away Monday, August 10, 2009, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, Iron Mountain.
She was born February 29, 1932, in Iron Mountain, Mich., daughter of the late Henry and Ellen (Schmeltzer) Schuls. Catherine grew up in Kingsford and attended Kingsford School. She owned and operated Smiley's Ceramic Shop in Quinnesec for 10 years, where she shared her love of ceramics.
During her younger years, Catherine worked on the family farm in Florence. Catherine also worked as a nursing assistant at the Florence Villa and she retired from Grede Foundries, Kingsford, after many years of employment.
Catherine enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, and watching movies. She also enjoyed learning to use her computer and spent much of her time emailing her friends. Catherine was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Kingsford.
She is survived by four sons, Bradley Hannula, Iron Mountain, Brian Hannula, Steven (Diane) Hannula, Spokane, Wash., Gordon (Mary) Hannula, Iron River; four daughters, Sherry (Ron) Lindlbauer, Della (Ron) Rochon, Donna Hannula, all of Iron Mountain, Gail (Frank) O'Neal, Pensacola, Fla.; two sisters, Edna Sweet, Sheboygan, Wis., Janice Cretens, Iron Mountain; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Joseph Annear; two great-grandsons, Clayton Hannula, Erich Lindlbauer; two brothers, Vernon Schuls, Hank Schuls, Jr.; one sister, Gloria Schuls; and a significant friend, Charles "Bud" Yunkari.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 13, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. The funeral service will be Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at the church. Rev. Chad Ott will officiate. Burial will be in Breitung Township Cemetery, Quinnesec.
