Obituary

Catherine E. Bishop, 84, of Crystal Falls, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, on Nov. 13, 2006, at Iron County Community Hospital in Iron River. She was born Nov. 8, 1922, in Crystal Falls, the daughter of the late Charles G. and Hulda (Stolberg) Johnson. On October 24, 1953 she married Harold E. Bishop of Crystal Falls at United Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on March 1, 2002. She graduated from Crystal Falls High School in 1941. After graduation she went to Washington D.C. to be a stenographer in the Office of Bureau of Ships, U.S. Navy Department. In 1943 she returned to Crystal Falls to be the secretary for Stephen and Josiah Royce, Geologists for Pickands, Mather & Co. where she worked until 1956. After that she worked in the Iron Country Clerk's office. In 1960, she partnered with her husband, Harold, to open Bishop's Greenhouse and Nursery in Crystal Falls which they operated until 2000. In 1973 she went to work at the Pennisula Title and Abstract Co. where she worked until the mid 1980's. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Latva, (fiance' Larry Conwell) of Chilton Wis.; two sisters, Lillian (Bill) Ahola and Margaret Davis of Crystal Falls; nephews, Robert (Louise) Ahola, John (Pat) Ahola of Crystal Falls; nieces, Susan (Frank) Foley of Dallas Ga., and Barbara Reed of Santa Clara, Calif.; many great nieces, nephews, great-great nieces, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Sigred Rosengren, Helen Johnson; one brother, Carl Johnson; two brothers-in-law, Clinton Davis and Clinton Rosengren, and one sister-in-law, Eleanor Bishop. Catherine was an active member of United Lutheran Church, enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and all plants and flowers. Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 17, 2006 at United Lutheran Church, Crystal Falls. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday at the church. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls. Friends may leave condolences to Catherine's family online at www.jacobsfuneralhomes.com.
