Caroline C. Mattson, 88, of Niagara, Wis., passed away Friday, April 29, 2011, at Maryhill Manor, Niagara.
She was born on January 25, 1923, in Niagara, daughter of the late Gustave and Emma (Gauthier) Tutas. Caroline grew up in Niagara and graduated from Niagara High School, Class of 1940. Caroline married Alfred Mattson on November 10, 1945, in Chicago, Ill. He preceded her in death in 1967.
Caroline enjoyed crocheting, crafting, and especially spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Cretton-Tutas Women's Auxiliary Post No. 136. Caroline worked for many years early on as a waitress at the Kimlark Inn and Niagara Clubhouse, and as a clerk at John Zaidels Grocery and the U-Save Grocery Store, Niagara.
Later in life, she waitressed at many local places including the Four Season's Resort, Iron Mountain Elk's Club, and the Coleman Lake Club. Caroline was very artistic, whether it be sewing clothes, designing costumes, creating pieces of art, cooking fabulous meals, or planting beautiful gardens.
Her greatest achievement was being a mother and grandmother and she was always there when needed.
She is survived by two daughters, Michelle Kulman, Niagara, Renee (Randy) Ryan, Quinnesec, Mich.; one brother, Dan Tutas, Maryland; three sisters, Therese Bratko, Chicago, Shirley Cox, Chicago, Patricia Aderman, Menominee, Mich.; four grandchildren, Marc (Sherry Champion)Kulman, Menasha, Wis., Josh (Dawn) Kulman, Miranda (Ken Scray) Main, Mallory Ryan, all of Green Bay, Wis.; five great-grandsons, Griffen, Owen, Jack, Asher, and Trevor; numerous nieces and nephews, and special nephew, Jeff Bratko.
Caroline was preceded in death by two brothers, James and William Tutas; a grandson, Chris Kulman; and son-in-law, Dennis Kulman.
The visitation will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Niagara. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m., Tuesday at the church. Rev. Raymond Valerio will officiate. Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery, Niagara.
The family would like to thank the staff at Maryhill Manor for the care and special attention that was given to Caroline over the past six years and especially the last few weeks.
