Carmen J. Rhodes, 87, of Niagara, passed away Sunday, November 4, 2012, at Maryhill Manor, Niagara, Wis.
She was born January 27, 1925, in Gays Mills, Wis., daughter of the late James and Freda (Showen) Farrington. Carmen married Fred Rhodes on July 26, 1947, in Kingsford, Mich. They celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary this past summer.
Carmen was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Niagara, and served on the Women's Auxiliary until her retirement in 1985. She also taught high school catechism. Carmen was blessed with many wonderful friends with whom she played on dart ball, bowling and golf leagues. Following her retirement from K-Mart Corporation where she was employed as their Personnel Manager for ten years, Carmen and Fred enjoyed many years of traveling to Gulf Shores, Alabama, Mexico, and Sun City, Arizona, with their lifelong friends, Ray and Lois Steeno.
She is survived by her devoted and loving husband Fred Rhodes; one son, David (Karen) Rhodes, Pleasant View, Utah; two daughters, Pamela Vross, De Pere, Wis., Michelene (Mark) Kaster, Green Bay, Wis.; one brother, Eugene Farrington, Kingsford, Mich.; two sisters, Mescal Lindholm, Kingsford, and Janine Romitti, Aurora, Wis.
Carmen's greatest joy was her family. She was blessed with six grandchildren, Piper Rhodes (Cameron Smith), Salt Lake City, Utah, Ashley Rhodes, New York City, N.Y., Michael (Lorrie) Vross, Iron Mountain, Matthew Vross, Arlington, Va., and Madison, Emma Kaster, Green Bay; great-grandchildren, Ella Baker-Smith, Lexie, Libby, Eleanor, Matti, and Gloria Vross.
In addition to her parents, Carmen was preceded in death by one brother, Myron Farrington.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Maryhill Manor for the excellent care she received for the past three years during her courageous struggle with Alzheimer Disease.
Special thanks to Kathy Gauthier, Bob Sauld and Melody Schaut for the compassionate care offered to Carmen, Fred and family.
Despite the memory loss suffered by Carmen, she always knew and greeted her baby sister, Janine Romitti. Words cannot begin to express the gratitude felt for all of the time, care and love that she so graciously gave to Carmen and the rest of the family for many, many years.
Visitation will be held Saturday, November 17, 2012, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Niagara. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the church. Rev. Matt Settle will officiate.
