He was born September 13, 1914, in Chicago, Ill., son of the late Pietro and Grace (Vitale) Calo. The family moved to Iron Mountain in 1925, where his father opened a tailor and furrier shop. Carlo graduated from Iron Mountain High School, Class of 1933. After high school, Carlo traveled throughout the Midwest performing as a drummer with vaudeville shows. In 1936, he moved to Detroit where he played both drums and trumpet for various dance bands. In the early 40's, Carlo returned to Iron Mountain to help his father in his business. In 1946, he married Kathleen Kernan of Aurora. After his father retired in 1953, Carlo worked as a salesman for various automobile dealerships in the area until his retirement. From the time he returned to Iron Mountain, Carlo continued to perform with a number of local groups, eventually forming his own dance band. Carlo joined the local musician's union and eventually became their secretary/treasurer, a post he held for 45 years. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians for over 70 years. Carlo enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He had a positive outlook on life and a wonderful sense of humor.
