Kingsford-Bruno Marana, 90, of Kingsford, Mich., passed away Saturday, December 10, 2016 at ManorCare Health Care Facility, Kingsford.
He was born March 30, 1926, in Caspian, Mich., son of the late Angelo and Emma (Fontana) Marana. He attended Caspian Elementary and graduated from Stambaugh High School, Class of 1944. After graduation Bruno enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Pacific during WW II, from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Bruno met his future wife, Anita Vezzetti, through mutual friends when she came home from Chicago for her grandmother's funeral. They were married on January 5, 1957 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian.
He attended Wayne State University on a football scholarship and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health. Bruno played four years of varsity football as a center on offense and a linebacker on defense. He was inducted into the Wayne State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. After graduation from Wayne State, he spent one year teaching physical education at Detroit Country Day High School until 1955. In 1958, Bruno returned to his first love of coaching football and was named head football coach at Ishpeming High School. He was also the elementary and high school physical education teacher, swim teacher, baseball coach, and junior varsity basketball coach. In 1965, Bruno attended Northern Michigan University for his Master's Degree in Health Education and Administration. He was promoted to assistant principal and athletic director until 1979. While in Ishpeming, Bruno became a well-known basketball and football official.
In 1979, Bruno along with his family moved to Kingsford, where he became the Assistant Principal at Kingsford High School, retiring in 1993. He decided he didn't want to attend anymore high school dances so he returned in 1993 to become the assistant junior varsity high school coach at Iron Mountain. He missed the contact with the people and decided to spend a couple years substituting in the local area.
Athletics were very important to him and he was involved as a coach, parent, and athletic director. His favorite quote before games to his children was, "If you don't win, don't come home." They knew this wasn't really true but, reminded them of the importance of winning.
Bruno is survived by his wife Anita; two sons, Mark (Lisa) Marana of Negaunee, Mich. and Dr. Peter Marana, Norway, Mich.; and five grandchildren, Mario, Mykka, Kennan, Michael and Aimee
.
