Bonnie L. Mellema, 80, of Crystal Falls, passed away March 8, 2014, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls.
She was born March 6, 1934, in Ohio, daughter of the late Harold O. and Ruth A. (Hennen) Hodge. Bonnie married the late Don G. Mellema from Zeeland, Mich., on December 8, 1951. Besides being a homemaker, she worked for many years as a nurse in Dowagic, Mich. and in homecare for the elderly. She dearly loved her six Ds (children) and her cabin-in-the woods. Some of her favorite things were the color red, Mickey Mouse and Peppermint Patties. In nature she enjoyed birds, especially cardinals, lady bugs and butterflies.
Bonnie is survived by her children, Donna (Dave) Adams, Channing, Mich., Darsi (Jeff) Huffman, Pawpaw, Mich., Devere (Kim) Mellema, Burns, Ore., Darryl Mellema, Decatur, Mich., and Dwayne Mellema, Lakeland, Fla.; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren and a sister Anita Vollink, Dorr, Mich.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one brother, Harold O. Hodge, Jr.; one sister, Flora Askren; one son, Douglas Mellema and two granddaughters, Danielle Adams and Colrenda Mellema.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014, 10:00 a.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church, Sagola, Mich. A light luncheon will immediately follow the service.
