Bernice Kaven, 102, of Crystal Falls, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls.
She was born July 13, 1909, in Escanaba, Mich., daughter of the late Joseph and Emma (Kaufman) Embs. After graduating from Escanaba High School, Bernice attended Lawrence College for two years. She married Maurice Nolingberg who owned and operated the Nolingberg Bakery. He preceded her in death in 1956.
In 1959, Bernice married Roland Kaven of Crystal Falls, who was the Iron County Agriculture Agent. He preceded her in death in 1980. In 1962, Bernice and Roland moved to Fairbanks, Ala., where Bernice finished her education with a degree in history and speech. In 1971, they returned to Crystal Falls where she accepted a position as Director for the Senior Citizens and Council on Aging.
She was a member of the United Lutheran Church, Crystal Falls.
Bernice is survived by one son, Carl (Maxine) Nolingberg, Iron River; two step-sons, George (Phyllis) Kaven, Petoski, Mich., Ernest (Rose) Kaven, Newberry, Mich.; six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Jack Nolingberg and one brother, George Embs.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 25, 2012, at Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls. Rev. Micheal Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Iron River.
