Arvid J. Leppiaho, 87, Crystal Falls, passed away Saturday, December 20, 2008, at Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls.
He was born July 18, 1921, in Crystal Falls, son of the late John and Hilma (Norback) Leppiaho. On June 16, 1980, he married Claudia Sensiba. She survives.
Arvid worked as a union carpenter in Chicago for over 30 years. After returning to Crystal Falls he operated Arvid's Insulation. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II. He was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Tufts Rondon Post No. 2891 and the American Legion Louis Bowman Post No. 87, Crystal Falls. Arvid was an avid sports fan especially enjoying baseball. He had a great sense of humor and was affectionately known to many as "Uncle Arvid".
Survivors include his wife, Claudia Leppiaho, Crystal Falls; one brother, Eino Leppiaho, Hershey; three sisters, Bertha King and Aili Halls, both of Crystal Falls, Helia Battistella, Alpha; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Toivo Aho, Emil, Martin, Waino, and Vilho Leppiaho, and three sisters, Lillian Calangon, Lila Blank and Impi Lukkarila.

Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2008, at United Lutheran Church, Crystal Falls. Funeral services, 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the church. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. The East Side Veterans Council will Pass In Review at 10:45 a.m., Saturday, at the church. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls, in the spring with military rites accorded by the East Side Veterans Council.
