Armand "Bud" Prenevost, 85, passed away peacefully Monday, February 10, 2014, at around 6 a.m., under the compassionate, watchful care of the staff at the Oscar G. Johnson Veteran's Hospital in Iron Mountain, Mich. He died of complications from a brain hemorrhage he experienced the previous Tuesday. He was born September 18, 1928, in the family home on Wells St., in "25 location," to Elizabeth "Mimi" Prenevost (Blitte) and Armand Prenevost. From the start, he was known as "Buddy." Bud had a wonderful boyhood through the years of the Depression and World War II, stalking partridge on the forested slopes of Pine Mountain, engaging in vigorous rock fights with his gang of neighborhood friends (Dick Abraham, Henry Pozza and many others), getting sent by his mother to pick gallons of wild blueberries in the fields towards the Menominee and listening to "The Shadow" on the radio. He was apparently quite a scrapper as a boy; his long-suffering mother was sure he was going to be a gangster. He decided to be a bang-up salesman instead. Bud graduated from Iron Mountain High School, Class of 1947. He was working at Fugere Bros. when a striking young brunette strolled in for a new pair of shoes. Bud informed her that her feet were rather bigger than the size she was asking for, but then unbent her bent nose by asking her to a dance, back in the better days when there used to be "dances" at "dance halls." Gloria Anderson said yes, both to the date and the marriage proposal soon to follow. Soon after getting hitched, Bud answered Uncle Sam's call to help fight the North Koreans. He served in the US Army, training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, driving the 13 hours back and forth to Iron Mountain on leaves to visit his new wife. Bud was always proud of his days in the service, at a time when there was little doubt that he, as an American fighting man, was a force for good in the world. After an honorable discharge, in the mid-50's, Bud grabbed an opportunity to work for P&H Harnischfeger, which required a move south from his beloved UP to Milwaukee. Bud & Gloria settled in Cedarburg, WI, where the first order of business was to get a little slice of woods back up north and build a tar paper hunting cabin. In 1961, they adopted an infant boy, Jeffrey Paul. Because they had what was at the time called a "mixed marriage" – he was Catholic, she was Baptist – they had to adopt through the Wisconsin state adoption agency; Jeff was raised on a nice mix of Catholic masses and Baptist potlucks. Bud was a good husband and the best of fathers, raising his child on a solid course of playing catch, fishing, hunting, going to church, and the Green Bay Packers. He had a long and very successful 30 year career with P&H, eventually moving to the Chicago area to head-up regional hoist sales, winning "Salesman of the Year" honors for many years in a row in the late 70's and early 80's. All through this time in Wisconsin & Illinois, the Prenevost family would at every opportunity pile into the car and head north to Iron Mountain – to what was always "home." In the mid-80's, at age 55, he retired and with all possible haste shook the Illinois dirt off his heels to return home, to a new house on a bluff looking out across the Menominee River. In his extended golden years, he was very active in the Sportsman's Club, UP Muzzleloaders Association, Kiwanis, St. Mary Queen of Peace, and the local senior citizen's center. A while after Gloria passed away in 2000, he met and married Alene Christy, with whom he shared ten sweet years of dancing, travels, and loving companionship. Bud is survived by his wife Alene Christy Prenevost, Iron Mountain; one son Jeff Prenevost (Beverly Prenevost) of Chelsea, MI; three grandchildren, Lottie (19), Beau (18), and Claire (16); and one sister, Louise Nault of Sturgeon Bay, WI. Visitation will be, Wednesday, February 12, 2014, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Fr. Michael Woempner will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.
