Ann Robichaud
CRYSTAL FALLS — Ann M. (Anesi) Robichaud, 88, of Crystal Falls passed away Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, after a long, full life.
She was born Aug. 16, 1914, in the Anesi Saloon in Mansfield, daughter of the late John and Domenica Anesi. Ann attended the Mansfield grade school and graduated from Crystal Falls High School in 1932. At an early age she distinguished herself in the 4-H movement, winning trips to national conferences at age 14.
After school, Ann left for Chicago where a series of jobs led her to work in St. Louis and Fort Worth, Texas. The song San Antonio Rose became her favorite.
After returning to Crystal Falls to care for her sick mother, she taught English and communication for the National Youth Association (NYA).
On Aug. 4, 1940, she married Edward "Birdie" Robichaud, then the Mansfield mailman. They began their life on the family farm in Mansfield and moved to the Western location in Crystal Falls where Birdie worked for the WPA. When he became the administrator of the Iron County Medical Care Facility (in those days known as the Poor Farm and the Iron Co. Infirmary), the family moved into the facility and lived there for 15 years until moving into a family home on Wisconsin Avenue. After her husband's death in 1976, Ann moved to an apartment in downtown Crystal Falls, where she remained for 22 years until moving in with her daughter on Lake Emily in 2000.
Noted for her generosity, love of people and genuine commitment to helping others, Ann served as the president of the Altar Guild of Guardian Angels Parish for many years.
Her love of politics led her to working for the Democratic party; she was selected as a delegate to the 1980 Democratic Convention. She has many scrapbooks filled with numerous letters to and from politicians including Presidents Kennedy, Carter and Clinton and John Glenn demonstrated her strong advocacy for worthwhile causes.
Ann loved flowers and grew stunning Pine Peonies.
Her home witnessed a steady stream of family and visitors, many fiends she had made while taking family trips around the United States.
All those who knew her were touched by her vivacity, boldness and wit.
Ann is survived by two daughters, LaDena Schnapper of Crystal Falls and Colleen Robichaud of Silver Spring, Md.; three grandchildren, Jonas, Simeon and Phillip; two sisters, Ella (George) Guyon of Winona, Minn., and Betty (Alex) Dobrenski of Crystal Falls, many nieces, nephews and a constellation of dear friends and acquaintances.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward; two brothers, John and Frank, and five sisters, Mary Sundquist, Kathryn Clement, Lodovine Jeffrey, Angeline Battye and Rose Zdravecky.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at Guardian Angels Catholic Church of Crystal Falls.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Father James Challoncin will officiate.
