Americo "Mudd" Altobelli, 85, of Iron Mountain, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2012, at Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain.
He was born December 22, 1926, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Leonard and Delores Altobelli. Mudd was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain, attending school here. He joined the U.S. Navy during WWII as a Corpsman. After being discharged, he married Arlene Costa on May 6, 1950, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. In 1951, Mudd was called back to service and served once again in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, being discharged in 1954.
Upon his return to Iron Mountain, Mudd worked for Standard Service and Supply Company, which later became W. B. Thompson, as a Sales Engineer, distributing mining equipment, retiring after 57 years. After retiring, Mudd and Arlene enjoyed time spent in Apache Junction, Ariz., where they wintered for 13 years.
Mudd was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and dedicated many long hours to the Kiwanis Ski Club where he was a very active member and served as its president for years. He was so very proud of his daughter Therese, as she became the first woman to jump at Pine Mountain. Mudd enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, gardening, wine making, and especially spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Arlene; two sons, Michael (Janice ) Altobelli, Iron Mountain, James (Karen) Altobelli, Breitung Township; one daughter, Therese (Tom) Olsen, Breitung Township; one sister, Josephine Syrjanen, Florence, Wis.;four grandchildren, Matthew, Amanda, Tyler and Heidi; two great-grandchildren, Paige and Gracelyn; two sisters-in-law, Rena Altobelli, Escanaba, Mich., Bernice Altobelli, Iron Mountain; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mudd was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and John Altobelli and one brother-in-law, Leo Syrjanen.
The visitation will be Tuesday, October 23, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Prayers will be recited Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, 10:00 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain. The American Legion Uren-Cooper-Johnson Post No. 50 of Iron Mountain will accord Military Honors at graveside.
