Obituary

Alice Victoria Kadletz, 83, of Iron Mountain, peacefully passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at Dickinson County Hospital, Iron Mountain, following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God and the love and prayers of family and friends carried her through the seven-year battle. She was born on October 24, 1928, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Michael and Alice (Nadon) Gardiner. She was one of fifteen children. Alice was a 1946 graduate of Kingsford High School. Alice began her college education at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., to pursue a degree in Music and to discern the religious life. In 1952, she earned her Bachelor's of Nursing degree from Detroit Mercy College. Alice returned home to the Kingsford area and began working at Dickinson County Hospital as a registered nurse. On July 21, 1955, Alice married the love of her life Dr. Edward R. Kadletz, in Des Moines, Iowa. Upon her husband's completion of medical school, they moved to Mt. Clemens, Mich. In 1970, they relocated back to the Upper Peninsula to be closer to family. In addition to raising their six children, Alice worked with her husband at his family practice, Kingsford Community Medical Centre. She also loved to attend daily mass, cook, sew, paint, and garden. She devoted herself completely to her family and Catholic faith. Alice was a lifelong member of American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. As a young girl, she played the organ at daily mass. She later became choir director and a member of the senior choir. She was a member of the Third Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites and a regular adorer at the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. She is survived by her loving children, Edward "Michael", Minneapolis, Minn., Marty (Leslie), Slinger, Wis., Mary (Bob) Tuomela, Breitung Township, John (Sandy), Kingsford, Mich., Amy (Matt) Redlon, Chaska, Minn.; eight beloved grandchildren, Alison Kadletz, Krista and Eric Tuomela, Katie, Abby, and Jake Kadletz, Joshua and Grace Redlon; sister, Donna Friedman, Dacula, Ga.; brothers, Henry (Jean), Maryland, N.Y., Joe, Ferndale, Wash., Bernard (Ursula), Senora, Calif., Bill (Carol), Mena, Ark., Gene (Audrey), New Castle, Pa., Chuck, Iron River, Mich.; and many special friends, nieces, and nephews. In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Edward R. Kadletz in March 2008, and her daughter, Nancy Kadletz in November 2011. Her sisters: Stella McNeil, Joan Dugas, and Carol Jean Gardiner and brothers: Michael, Wilfred "Ding", Carl, and Francis. Visitation will be Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Prayers will be offered Friday at 10:30 AM at the funeral home. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, September 7, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church, Kingsford, with a luncheon to follow. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate. Entombment will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain. Pallbearers will be Ed Kadletz, Marty Kadletz, John Kadletz, Bob Tuomela, Matt Redlon, Eric Tuomela, Jake Kadletz, and Joshua Redlon. Memorial donations may be made to the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, Monastery of the Holy Cross, PO Box 397, Iron Mountain, MI or American Martyrs Catholic Church, 908 W Sagola Ave., Kingsford, MI.
