Obituary

Iron Mountain: Alfonse Angelo Fuse, age 92, of 1000 West Main Street, Iron Mountain, Michigan, went to his eternal rest on November 8, 2006, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford. He was born June 9, 1914, to the late Anton and Josephine (Tamborini) Fuse in Iron Mountain. He was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain. Alfonse was a graduate of the Iron Mountain High School with the class of 1932. During these depression years he worked on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and then served in two CCC (Civilian Conservations Corp.) camps at Sidnaw and Escanaba River. He became a full time employee of the Iron Mountain Fire Department on November 16, 1938. Alfonse served in various capacities and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1950 and to Fire Chief in 1966. He retired in July of 1979, after 41 years of service at a job he loved and was truly devoted to. While a member of the Fire Department, he was a member of Local 554 IAFF from 1938 – 1966 serving as president, and secretary treasurer. As Fire Chief, he was a Life Member of both the Michigan State Fire Chiefs Association and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. In addition, he served on the Police and Fireman Retirement Board for 21 years, mostly as president. He was also a co-organizer of the Northwoods Fire Chiefs Association, and also served on the steering committee that reorganized the defunct U.P. Fire Chiefs Organization. Alfonse also served on the Board of Directors with the following civic organizations- Muscular Dystrophy (publicity chairman); American Red Cross (disaster chairman); Piasano Club (director and secretary); Iron Mountain Housing Commission (Vice President); VFW (Veteran of Foreign Wars) member; Immaculate Conception Church Parish Council and member of the Holy Name Society; and Share your Christmas drives. After retirement, he served as an alderman of Ward 1 and was also a member of the Charter Revision Committee creating a city-manager form of government for Iron Mountain. He joined Community Schools writing class and wrote many articles on the lives of local residents for the book published called "Scrapbook Memories). Alfonse enlisted on July 10, 1942 in the U. S. Marine Corp. during World War II, serving for 42 months mainly in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of War with the First Marine Air Wing Mag 25 Air Transport Group. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant-instrument specialist. He later joined the United States Naval Reserve for eight years. Alfonse married Marcene Andreini on October 30, 1945, at the Immaculate Conception Church, both being lifetime members of this church. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in October 1995 and recently celebrated 61 years of marriage. Survivors include his wife, Marcene; two sons, Robert (fiancée Teresa Bryant) Fuse, John (Cheryl) Fuse, both of Iron Mountain; one daughter, Mary Jo (Donald) Hanson, Ada, Michigan; four grandchildren, Mark (Lisa) Fuse, Scotsdale, Arizona, Angela (Matthew) Whitener, Indian River, Michigan, Lauren Hanson and Tony Hanson of Ada, Michigan; two great grandchildren, Cassidy Whitener, Indian River, Michigan, Ava Jean Fuse, Scotsdale, Arizona; six nephews, Dr. Ronald (Shirley) Patten, Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Ray (Roberta) Pataconi, Green Bay, Wisconsin, Dr. Jeffrey (Sandy) Andreini, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Todd (Charlotte) Andreini, Cary, North Carolina, Gerald Agnew, Waukesha, Wisconsin, Jack (Mary) Andreini, Iron Mountain, Michigan; brothers and sisters in law, Walter (Elda) Andreini, Gerald (Patricia) Andreini all of Iron Mountain, Michigan; special friends, Mario Badini, Orlando Eutizzi; and many cousins. Besides his parents, Alfonse was preceded in death by a sister, Cecilia (Rudolph) Pataconi; an infant son; and niece Susan (Andreini) Agnew. His many hobbies included extensive traveling with family in United States and abroad. His most memorable event was being able to shake hands and talk with Pope John Paul II, at the Vatican in Rome, Italy. He was very interested in the history of Iron Mountain and made many scrapbooks on articles of interest and photo albums of special events and fires. He enjoyed gardening and he was an exhibitor at the Dickinson County Fair and received an award for doing so for fifty years. He loved his family and home on Tamborini Hill on the North side of Iron Mountain where he was born and resided until due to Parkinson Disease, he became a resident at Manor Care for two and a half years. He was very happy there and grateful for the excellent care and help he received. Visitation will be Saturday, November 11, 2006, 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Prayers will be recited 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The Funeral Mass will be Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established in his memory.
