Obituary for William E. Manko

Iron Mountain- William E. Manko, 74, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Monday, December 27, 2021, at ProMedica Skilled Nursing Facility, Kingsford, Mich.

He was born November 4, 1947, in Iron Mountain, Mich., son of James E. and Ida M. (Grazidi) Manko. Bill graduated from St. Nazianz High School, Manitowoc, Wis., class of 1965. Following his high school graduation, Bill’s educational ambition allowed him to obtain his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from St. Johns College in Minnesota. He furthered his education by receiving his Master’s Degree in Counseling from Northern Michigan University, Marquette. Bill attended post graduate studies in rehabilitation counseling from Michigan State University in East Lansing, and continued to receive various certifications in the counseling field. He married Irene Paupore on June 22, 1974, at St. Mary & St. Joseph Church, Iron Mountain. They resided in East Lansing for one year before moving back to Iron Mountain. Bill worked for the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District, Norway, Mich. as the director of daycare centers from 1969 until 1974. He then went to work for the 95th District Court, Iron Mountain, as a probation officer from 1976 until 1993. Bill then went to work for the Dickinson-Iron Substance Abuse Services, Iron River, Mich., from 1993 until 1997. He took a position in 1997 until 2006 with Marquette General Hospital, Marquette, Mich., as an employee assistance counselor, and he completed his many years of service with the Hannaville Indian Community, Wilson, Mich., as a substance abuse counselor from 2006 until 2009.

Bill was an active member of St. Mary & St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he served as Lay Minister for many years. He was a religious man and served on the Parish Council.

Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting, RV Camping, listening to music, investing in the stock market, going on rides to relax, and negotiating a good deal. He was a loving family man who was spontaneous, laid back, and a compassionate man, who will be missed dearly.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Irene Manko, Iron Mountain, Mich.; one son, James Manko, Houghton Lake, Mich.; two daughters, Katie Weidner, Johnston, Iowa and Mary (Edward) Jasch, Rockford, Mich.; one brother, Jim (Linda) Manko, Colgate, Wis.; and by four grandchildren, David, Kristin, Edward and William; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Mary Paupore, Kingsford, Mich.; and sister-in-law, Gretchen Paupore, Spread Eagle, Wis.; and by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, James and Ida Manko; Bill was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Tom Paupore; uncle and fatherly figure, William Grazidi; and other numerous aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be held Friday, December 31, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Prayers will be recited Friday, 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary & St. Joseph Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. Rev. Fr. Janusz Romanek will officiate. Burial will take place in Breitung Township Cemetery, Quinnesec, Mich., at a later date.

A memorial will be established in Bill’s memory.
