Obituary for Stephen J. "Steve" DeBakker

Vulcan- Stephen J. “Steve” DeBakker, 58, of Vulcan, Mich., passed away Sunday, April 3, 2022.

He was born June 10, 1963, in Escanaba, Mich., son of George Michaud and Priscilla DeBakker. Steve grew up in Vulcan and graduated from Norway High School. He worked as a cable technician for Northside TV Co-op for 22 years and assisted the Niagara TV Co-op and U.P. Logon Internet as needed. In fact, he was pretty proud of working for all of them, and he enjoyed the job as they were all very good to him.

Steve loved hunting, fishing, race cars, and being outside with nature in the summer. He was a hard worker and loved his extended family and all the little kids. Whenever he saw anyone on the street or at a job, he always had a smile. He helped a lot of people because his family feels he was the greatest self-taught mechanic. Steve will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Priscilla and Ed Maeder; step-mother, Sandy Michaud; significant other, Pietra Matthews; one brother, Guy (Laureen) Michaud; six sisters, Gigi (Ed) Thoune, Gidget (Steven) Jesseman, Ginger Michaud, Laurie (Antonio) Herrera, Ericka Michaud, and Michele (Denis) Kreft; two uncles, Tom (Sandy) DeBakker and Eugene Walker; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

In addition to his father, George, Steve was preceded in death by his godmother, Rosalyn (Sam) Bilski, aunt, Lorraine Walker, and grandparents, Louis and Emma DeBakker.

Visitation will be held Monday, April 18, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain, Mich., with a Memorial Service to follow Monday at noon. Deacon Don Christy will officiate. Burial will be in Norway Township Cemetery in the spring.
