Obituary for Paul Peter Malone
Paul Peter Malone, 77, of Iron Mountain, Mich. died peacefully on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at the Oscar G Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain following a brief illness.
The son of the late Peter and Marion (Wikert) Malone, Paul was born in 1942 in Teaneck, New Jersey. He worked in the family trade of home improvements and roofing, and later joined the US Army in 1961, spending four years in service to his country - some of that time stationed in Germany as a tank driver. He was honorably discharged in 1967.
Paul met his future wife, Eleanor Ryan, in 1964 in the toy department of Modell’s department store, where Paul’s best friend, Dave, was a manager and Ele was an employee. They were married in 1965 and initially made their home in New Milford, New Jersey, before later moving to south Jersey to be near family. Paul and Ele had two son, Nicholas and Michael, and they were married 55 years. Paul and Ele raised their children in Howell, New Jersey where they owned and boarded horses, loved to bowl, and entertained an endless parade of their sons’ friends.
In 1985, tired of the rush and expense of city life, the family relocated to Michigan, where Paul had numerous aunts, uncles and cousins living in Hermansville. They bought a farm on Hamilton Lakes Road, and Paul ran his own business, Malone Home Improvements, for several years, employing both of his sons. In 1993 Paul and his wife opened a pet shop in Norway, Safari Farm, which they operated for several years. He always nurtured a love for horses and country living, enjoyed years of dog breeding with his wife and was a beloved foster father. In his retirement years he was a rural route driver for the Daily News, faithfully getting his newspapers to his customers on time and in all sorts of weather, until February 2020 when he could no longer drive.
Paul loved to visit over a cup of coffee, never tired of watching (the same!) Western movies and enjoyed planting flowers, feeding the birds, and puttering in his garage. He never lost his Jersey accent. You could tell, from the expression on his face, that he loved to reminisce about the years of his youth spent out East – the good times spent with family and friends in his heyday and when his children were young – which were filled with time at the boardwalk, , drives in the autumn to favorite country-side destinations such as Van Riper and Tice Farms, and frequent stops at the Italian bakery. You can be sure he will be having a “pork roll, egg and cheese” on a poppyseed hard roll every morning in Heaven!
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Eleanor, two sons Nick (Celeste) and Mike; his grandchildren – who knew him as “Poppo” - Max (Karla) Malone of California, Hannah (Lindsay) Groeneveld of Washington, Molly Malone of Kansas, Matthew (Kayla) Malone of Marquette and Kiersten Malone of Ishpeming. Certainly, his beloved dogs, Sunny, Jojo and Guido will miss him too. He leaves a brother, Dan Malone (children Desiree and Dustin) of Kingsford, two sisters Arlene (Doug) Key of New Jersey (children Jamie, Lisa and David) and Diane (Bob) Delaney of New York (children Danielle, Michael and James) ; three brothers-in-law, Richard (Maria) Ryan, Glenn Ryan (daughter Micki) and Sean (Lorrie) Ryan; sisters-in-law Naomi Loveland (Larry Gotham) and Linda Quirolo; special friends Fr Mike Woempner, Jeannette Silver, the Rosatti sisters and Diane Luczak.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain, Mich. Rev. Fr. Michael Woempner will officiate.
