Obituary for Michael E. Koszyk

Michael Edward Koszyk Sr., 75, of Crystal Falls, Mich., passed away on April 11, 2023. He was born May 3, 1947, in Chicago, Ill., son of Walter and Margaret (Geotz) Koszyk. Michael graduated from Kelly High School in 1965 and then started working for the Chicago Police Department when he was 18.

In addition to working for the police department, Michael worked for Illinois Auto Electric. It was here that he met Deborah Flenard. They were married in Chicago, Ill., on May 25, 1975. Every November, Michael would spend time with his friend’s deer hunting in the Crystal Falls area. On one of his trips, he purchased some property there. During his last year with the police department, Michael started the construction of his home he designed on his property in Crystal Falls. After working for the Chicago Police Department for 33 years, Michael retired in 1997 and moved to Crystal Falls, Mich., upon the completion of his home. Michael was involved in his new community, as well as worked for the road commission and the planning commission for Iron County. He also ran for Mayor of Crystal Falls.

Michael had a love for fast cars, his two favorites being his 1969 Dodge Charger and his 1968 Plymouth Road Runner. Some of his other hobbies included collecting pocket watches and firearms and his Kubota tractor. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Michael was survived by his wife of 47 years, Deborah Koszyk; sons, Brian Koszyk, Michael (Barbara) Koszyk Jr., and Walter (Dulce) Koszyk; daughters, Karen (Josh) Fox and Christina (Dave) Ochota; sisters, Susan (Michael) Grere and Judy Koszyk; and by grandchildren, Addison Fox, Alivia Fox, Casen Fox, Jessica Ochota, and Joe Ochota.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brothers, Walter Koszyk, David Koszyk, and Jackie Koszyk.

In accordance with Michael’s wishes, private family services will be held.

The family has chosen Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls, Mich., to honor Michael’s legacy.
