Obituary for Maureen L. ""Mimi"" Carey

Iron Mountain- Maureen L., Carey, lovingly known as “Mimi” to her family and friends, 69, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at UP Health System, Marquette, Mich.

She was born December 3, 1951, in Crystal Falls, Mich., daughter of the late Charles D. and Joy L. (Erickson) Carey. Mimi grew up in Channing and was a graduate of Channing High School, class of 1970. She worked for Dr. Asselin Dental, Kingsford, Mich., as an assistant for many years. Mimi was an active 4H member at a young age and became a leader and eventually director of the 4H program in Iron County. She went to work for the Veterans Hospital in Battle Creek, Mich., where she worked as an inventory specialist for 15 years before transferring to the Veterans Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she worked another 15 years before retiring on October 1, 2011.

Mimi was a snowbird, traveling between her house in New Port Richey, Florida, and Iron Mountain. Over the years, she loved traveling, and besides being an active member of the 4H, she volunteered for Big Brothers and Big Sisters for many years and was awarded Big Sister of the Year Award for her involvement.

Mimi is survived by two brothers, Kim Carey and Patrick (Lorna) Carey, all of Channing, Mich.; one sister, Colleen (Tom) Carlson, Vulcan, Mich.; nieces and nephews, Grant (Lisa) Carlson, Eric (Dana) Carlson, Jennifer Carlson, Erica Carey, Stephanie (Juan Mayfield) Carey, Hannah (Taylor) Hicks, Parker (Heather) Carey, and Grace (Austin Granquist) Carey; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 2, 2021, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain, Mich. The funeral service will be Thursday, 12:30 p.m., at the funeral home. Rev. Michael March will officiate. Burial will take place in Channing Cemetery.
